About the Tarot

History of the Tarot

The Tarot as a deck of cards can be traced back to the early 1400s CE, and perhaps some years earlier.  The influences that are embodied in it come from traditions of Astrology, Alchemy, and many other spiritual traditions that reach back much earlier in history.

In the late 1800s CE, the Tarot underwent a major reformation by a number of individuals and organizations that fused the traditions of many of the esoteric arts to create the Traditional Tarot as we know it today.

In the 1970's, the Tarot again underwent a period of increased interest and rapid growth that saw the production of many new decks, reading styles and books.  This trend continues to this day.  The Tarot is now used by people across the globe, from all walks of life, as well as from all spiritual, religious and philosophical traditions.

A full exposition of the history of Tarot is not practical on this site, but there are many good books on the subject, some of which I have listed on the links page.

My Philosophy about the Tarot

I strive to use the Tarot to give readings that provide clarity and insight in a compassionate way to my clients whether I read for them in person or via an email exchange.

I have a great deal of respect for the historical traditions of Tarot, as hundreds of years of use have provided a time-tested base of knowledge about it.  But, I am also constantly learning from Tarot Scholars and other readers who continue to define new ways in which the Tarot can be used to better the lives of their clients.  I use a synthesis of traditional and intuitive methods to interpret the cards in a reading.  I use both traditional spreads and also design spreads specifically for particular questions.

We all are subject to the universal laws of cause and effect in our lives, but at the same time we are continually given the opportunities to exercise our divine gift of free will to influence the effects we experience.  I hope my readings provide wise counsel to help you make the best possible decisions in your life path and encourage you to create the destiny you desire.  Whether you use that counsel or not it is totally up to you.

I am not psychic, do not “read fortunes” or predict an immovable future or destiny.  What I do is interpret the message I discern in the Tarot Cards with the aid of my intuition and experience.

Please be aware that not all readings contain a positive and uplifting message – sometimes they provide a hard look at a truth that is unpleasant.  Whether positive or negative, I will always try to provide suggestions for both action and contemplation, and at times will point you to other resources that you may need to consult to help with your situation.
